Texas Climate Jobs Project Applauds Austin Energy's Commitment to Geothermal Power

Anticipates Job Growth and Climate Impact

AUSTIN– In response to Austin Energy's announcement of a new advanced geothermal power plant development in partnership with Exceed Energy Inc., Texas Climate Jobs Project Executive Director Bo Delp issued the following statement:

"For years, Texas labor organizations have advocated for scaling renewable geothermal energy in our state, and under Austin Energy’s leadership this pilot project marks a transformative moment for Texas’ role in our national energy landscape.”

“Geothermal power has the unique advantage of being clean and consistently available, harnessing the heat beneath our feet to power our communities. While wind and solar are crucial to our clean energy future, geothermal's ability to provide dispatchable, on-demand power fills a critical need in our energy mix. This project has tremendous potential to create steady, high-quality, family-sustaining union jobs while delivering clean, reliable power to Texans."

According to a report issued by Texas Climate Jobs Project and Cornell University's Worker Institute, advanced geothermal in Texas can create renewable energy and good jobs:

  • Texas has 384 GW of potential geothermal energy capacity

  • Installing 5 GW of geothermal energy would create 62,500 direct jobs over 10 years

  • Geothermal power in Texas could reduce emissions by over 8.4 million metric tons of CO2 annually compared to natural gas

  • Major Texas cities including Austin, El Paso, San Antonio and Dallas are located near significant geothermal resources with temperatures of at least 122°F

About the Texas Climate Jobs Project

The Texas Climate Jobs Project (TCJP) launched in July 2021 and is a coalition of Texas labor unions from across Texas united to fight climate change and reverse income inequality in the country's energy capital. The coalition advocates for long-term solutions to these intertwined crises by pushing state and local lawmakers to tap the state’s massive renewable energy potential and create millions of new family-sustaining union jobs.
